Children grow up so quickly, and at Freedom Photography, we believe it’s essential to document their journey through life with beautiful photography. To help you make the most of your photoshoot, we’ve put together a handy ‘to-do’ list. Beyond this article, we invite you to reach out to us for any assistance in capturing these special moments. Here are some tips we think will help you make your child’s photos truly unique:
- Get Haircuts a Week Before the Shoot
To ensure your child looks fresh but not overly styled, it’s a good idea to schedule haircuts about a week before the session. This allows enough time for the cut to settle, giving them a more natural, polished look. - Clean Knees and Feet
Many of our photoshoots involve children sitting or lying on the ground, especially if the session is outdoors. If your shoot falls during the warmer months, be sure to clean your child’s knees and feet. Trust us—Mums will appreciate it when they see their little one’s legs and feet looking spotless in those close-up shots! - Avoid Clothing with Logos and Stripes
While we want your child to look their best, we also want the focus to be on their face, not on a brand logo or busy patterns. Simple, solid colours work best to keep the attention where it belongs—on your child’s smile, expression, and personality. - Feed Them Before the Shoot
A well-fed child is a happy child! Make sure your little one has a good meal before the session to keep their energy up and their attention focused. As a rule of thumb, we always photograph children first in family sessions, as they tend to be the most engaged at the start. But it doesn’t take long for their attention to wander, so starting strong is key! - Bring a Change of Clothes
Kids love to play, and sometimes a little dirt is inevitable. To avoid any stress, always bring a spare outfit. Whether it’s during the waiting period or in the middle of the shoot, it’s always best to be prepared for those little moments of adventure.
We all know that photos have a magical way of transporting us back to the emotions of a moment in time. By following these tips, we hope you’ll feel more prepared and excited for your session, and that the resulting images will serve as lasting memories of your child’s unique journey.
